How often should I test or replace my smoke or carbon monoxide detector?
You should test your smoke detectors monthly to be sure they are working properly. If the detectors have batteries, you should change the batteries in the spring and fall when you change your clocks. Most new detectors have batteries that offer a 7 to 10-year life cycle. It’s best to replace any detector that is over 7 to 10 years old. There is usually a manufactured date printed on the detector.
